Anyone who leaves a bike at the station and continues their journey by train wants to find it again when they return. Secure bicycle parking facilities are therefore essential for travellers and commuters. Together with the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK), Deutsche Bahn has therefore launched a Bike+Ride campaign in 2021. In the coming years, thousands of new and secure bike parking systems are to be created at railway stations across Germany with the help of funding. In addition to bicycle car parks and collective locking systems, this also includes secure bicycle boxes. These are subject to a charge and are of particular interest to users of e-bikes and other high-quality bicycles.
Bicycle boxes at railway stations are small hire garages for bicycles. Thanks to their robust metal housing, they keep bicycles dry, clean and theft-proof. Each box is designed for a single bike and also offers space for rainwear, a cycle helmet and panniers. Many boxes also have a socket for charging e-bikes and pedelecs. There are boxes for short-term use from one day to one week and for long-term hire from one month to one year. Depending on availability, a personal bike box can be booked online via regional and national providers such as B+R Box. This requires a one-off registration on the respective website. You then select the location, a box and the desired rental period. After successful payment by credit card, PayPal or SEPA direct debit, you will receive an access code by e-mail and your bike can be parked securely.
