For 20 years, travellers and visitors have been able to experience contemporary art at Wolfsburg railway station. In collaboration with the Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg, the KUNST-STATION in the station’s waiting area offers various artists a space to create every six months. It all began with the artist Daniel Buren and his famous floor artwork, which can still be viewed at the station. To mark the 20th anniversary, the work “Coffee to go” by Berlin-based artist Katharina Arndt is on display at the station.

At the KUNST-STATION at Wolfsburg Central Station, travellers and visitors can enjoy art whilst they wait.

Contemporary photography, ‘giant toys’ or an entire room made of red artificial turf. Since 2007, the waiting area at Wolfsburg Central Station has regularly been transformed into a small gallery. The KUNST-STATION is popular with the thousands of travellers and visitors who pass through the station every day – as it allows them to experience art right there in the station. The waiting area is open round the clock, thus providing barrier-free access to a low-threshold cultural offering.

The KUNST-STATION project was developed in cooperation with the Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg, Deutsche Bahn and Neuland Wohnungsgesellschaft, and began in 2005 with the installation of the permanent floor artwork by artist Daniel Buren.

Now – 20 years later, to mark the anniversary – people at the station can enjoy the art of Berlin-based artist Katharina Arndt. Her large-scale wall piece captures scenes from everyday life at the station: people with wheeled suitcases and shoulder bags, quick glances at smartphones, bags of baked goods and takeaway coffee cups. With humorous exaggeration and vivid imagery, Arndt comments on the dynamism and restlessness of modern mobility. The work takes up the motif of being on the move, the character of those people who pass through the station every day, and links it to questions of identity and self-presentation in public space. Arndt’s figures do not conform to any ideal of beauty; rather, they celebrate the individual and the diversity of life.

The exhibition “Coffee to go” can be seen at Wolfsburg Central Station until 30 August 2026.
