The pilot project "DB Wegbegleitung" is a step towards a more inclusive travel experience for all. During the replacement service between Würzburg and Nürnberg from May to September 2023, blind and severely visually impaired travellers could receive assistance via video call on their smartphone to move safely between the track and the replacement stop. Trained staff were on hand to assist them.
Extensive tests were carried out to ensure that the service optimally meets the needs of blind users. Both blind travellers and DB staff were actively involved. The insights gained are continuously incorporated into the further development and improvement of the application.
The well-known influencer Erdin Ciplak, aka "Mr. BlindLife", has also tested the application and now presents the benefits and possible uses of DB Wegbegleitung in his own distinctive way on social media. For years, he has been inspiring people with visual impairments to shape their mobility independently and raising awareness of the challenges faced by blind and visually impaired people.
